First Job Experience

First Job Experience: The Messy Start That Actually Matters

Your first job won’t always feel magical, right for you or even interesting enough to always feel excited to start a new task you never did before. That’s okay. But sure enough, there will be days, moments, where you'll feel very energetic, ready to take on any and more tasks, that's normal too.

And even after a moment like that, if you feel discouraged and don't know where to start, what task is more important than the others, then ask your superior/ learning buddy or even your manager. Being a junior implies asking for help for anything and everything, that's to be expected. And appreciated, because it shows responsability.

It might be clumsy, unclear, and full of 'Am I doing this right?' moments. You’ll second-guess yourself, make rookie mistakes, and wonder if everyone else has it figured out. Spoiler: they don’t. And the messy parts? They’re where the growth really starts.

What usually happens after being hired?

  • You get assigned a learning buddy/ supervisor - that will be in charge and responsable for you and your work. Ask them for help anytime, tell them your concerns about a task & mistakes and
  • In most companies, learning by doing is the standard practice - This means that mistakes will happen but solutions will also be found. So try to keep your stress and anxiety at a minimum level, it's going to be okay and all will work out in your favor, one way or another.
  • You go through onboarding materials - videos, guides, maybe a quiz or two. Not all of it feels relevant, but it helps build a bit of context.
  • You get your first small tasks - sometimes very clear, other times just a vague “try this and let’s see.”
  • You’re added to one, two or more Teams channels - you don’t know what most people are talking about yet, but you follow along.
  • You start observing - who replies fast, who asks for help, what’s the team vibe.
  • You smile and nod a lot - even when you're totally lost.
  • You feel like an impostor… until you don’t.
  • You begin to notice what you're actually good at & start building your skills more and more.
  • You learn that the job is never just the job: it’s also communication, boundaries, asking for help, and managing energy.

Your first job isn’t about getting it perfect, it’s about figuring things out. It’s about learning how to manage expectations, talk to people with confidence, and bounce back from feedback that stings.

Because the first job isn’t just about what you do, it’s about who you become as a professional.

'My first week as an intern... I don't even remember it. I know I was trying very hard, showing up earlier than most of my coworkers, searching every term I was hearing in the office that was unfamiliar to me, not taking my lunch break (or any break) because I wanted to be good. That week was a blur of fake confidence, late-night overthinking and small wins I didn’t know I needed ( being told 'good job', 'nice design' mattered more than I thought).

Looking back, it wasn’t perfect, but it was the beginning of everything
